Warning. Listen at own risk No. 3

Neil Young

I walk in. My husband is sitting at his desk.

“Hi,” I say.

“Hi,” he says back.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m writing a song.”

“What’s it about?”

“I don’t know. That’s what I’m trying to work out.”

He plays with something on his desk.

“It’s probably about you,” he says. “Or at least you’re in it.”

“Really? Why?”

“Because you’re always walking into my songs, literally.

“Oh. Do you want me to walk out of it?”

“No. Stay.”

“It’s just that people are contacting me and they really like the songs of devastation you’ve been recommending and I’m wondering if you have another one.”

“Ok. How about On The Beach by Neil Young.”

“Ok. A different kind of devastation, then.”

“Yes. This song is different from the Tim Buckley and the Van Morrison song. This song is devastation in disguise. It has a gentle Californian groove but Neil Young sounds completely adrift. He sounds totally lost, as if he is a ghost haunting his own song. Anyway, it’s really one of the greatest songs of its time. ”

“Ok. Thanks. Shall I walk out of your song, now?”

“No. Stay.”

On the Beach

The world is turning,
I hope it don't turn away
The world is turning
I hope it don't turn away
All my pictures are falling
From the wall where
I placed them yesterday
The world is turning
I hope it don't turn away

I need a crowd of people
But I can't face them
Day to day
I need a crowd of people
But I can't face them
Day to day
Though my problems
Are meaningless
That don't make them
Go away
I need a crowd of people
But I can't face them
Day to day

I went to the radio interview
But I ended up alone
At the microphone
I went to the radio interview
But I ended up alone
At the microphone
Now I'm living
Out here on the beach,
But those seagulls are
Still out of reach
I went to the radio interview
But I ended up alone
At the microphone

Get out of town
Think I'll get out of town
Get out of town
Think I'll get out of town
I head for the sticks
With my bus and friends
I follow the road
Though I don't know
Where it ends
Get out of town
Think I'll get out of town

Cause the world is turning
I don't want to
See it turn away
