VISITING THE SURFACE OF THE WORLD

My friend, Deborah, who literally lives at the bottom of the world, kindly sent me this beautiful drawing. Deborah is my secret resource. This is one of a series of six illustrations for The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson (1836).

Here the mermaid is shown visiting the surface for the first time. The artist is Walter Crane, one of the most influential children’s artists of his generation. I look forward to seeing Deborah again when we can all visit the surface of our different worlds. Love, Susie x
