WHOEVER HAS LOVE ALSO HAS PAIN
A dear friend sent me this gorgeous song, La Llorona, and these words.
Do you know Llorona? It is such a mournful lament. I’ve always been fascinated by La Llorona, described as a Banshee-like folk ghost whose cries can be heard from the river. There are many versions and the origins are somewhat unknown, but I love this one by Chevala Vargas. I think this song was very significant for Frida Kahlo! Here is a particularly beautiful verse.
From the sea came a letter, Llorona,
That the mermaid sent to me,
From the sea came a letter, Llorona,
That the mermaid sent to me,
And in the letter she said to me, Llorona
Whoever has love also has pain.
And in the letter she said to me, Llorona
Whoever has love also has pain.
Thank you for this, Palma—such a beautiful lament and how very true—Whoever has love also has pain!
