Warning. Listen at own risk No.4

Alex Chilton

“Hi, darling?”

That’s me approaching my husband who is writing something at his desk, probably a song.

“I’ve been getting letters, loads of letters, from people and they are saying they really like your Songs of Devastation recommendations.”

“Okay, I have a song I’ve been reluctant to tell you about because of the catastrophic effect it can have on people. I’ve heard stories of people playing this song and simply losing the will to live.”

“Really?”

“The guy who sings it, Alex Chilton, had arguably the most racked voice on the planet and this song, for all it’s sophomoric-angst and general teenage-nihilism, still hits very deep and can be genuinely detrimental to even the most robust listener’s health.”

“Okay. I’m ready?”

Holocaust by Big Star”

“But warn those Vampire’s Wifers! This is the real deal and we are not fucking around here.”

“Okay.”

Warning. Listen to this song at own risk. We are not fucking around here.

Holocaust

Your eyes are almost dead
Can't get out of bed
And you can't sleep
You’re sitting down to dress
And you’re a mess
You look in the mirror
You look in your eyes
Say you realise
Everybody goes
Leaving those
Who fall behind
Everybody goes
As far as they can
They don't just care
They stood on the stairs
Laughing at your airs
Your mother's dead
She said, "Don't be afraid"
Your mother’s dead
You’re on your own
She’s in her bed
Everybody goes
Leaving those
Who fall behind
Everybody goes
As far as they can
They don't just care
You're a wasted face
You're a sad-eyed lie
You're a holocaust
