Warning Listen at Own Risk

"Hey, babe.” That’s my husband. “Check this out. It is a song by the most famous Lebanese singer of them all, Fairouz. It was sent to us by a couple called Natasha and Ghaleb. They suggested it as a Song of Devastation. It is called, ‘La Enta Habibi’ (You are not my love).”

My husband plays it. It’s early in the morning and we lie in the half-light and listen. We play it again.

“Wow. That’s very beautiful. Lovely way to start the day! I’d sort of forgotten about the Songs of Devastation.”

“Yeah. Me too,” he says.

“Sometimes the world just takes over and there isn’t any room for such things,” I say.

“That’s for sure,” he says. “Natasha and Ghaleb helped translate the lyrics. They are very sad. I love the line, ‘Two lost children on a bridge of echoes’.”

“Yes! Beautiful! Time to resurrect Songs of Devastation! There is still a whole load of sad songs out there!”

You Are Not My Love

You are not my love, nor did we grow up together
Our strange story got torn by the wind
I became a stranger to you
Forget me, my love

Yesterday we met, we sat on a rock
It was cold, the trees around us were bare
We tore the photographs, we erased the moon
I gave him back his letters and he gave me back mine

You are not my love, nor did we grow up together
Our strange story got torn by the wind
I became a stranger to you
Forget me, my love

We both folded our sails and walked into the horizon
Two lost children on a bridge of echoes
We parted calmly, everything was quiet
“Goodbye, pray for me!”… “Be happy, my love!”

You are not my love, nor did we grow up together
Our strange story got torn by the wind
I became a stranger to you
Forget me, my love
