Vampire in the Forest

Munch

I was looking through a new book of the despairing paintings of Edvard Munch with my husband (we really know how to have a good time!) and, anyway, how many books on Edvard Munch does one family need (!) and found yet another vampire painting, a subject that Munch returned to again and again – the female vampire sucking the blood of the cowering male. And, well, Munch was not what you’d call a ladies man, and has over the years got into a fair amount of trouble for his representation of women, but I always found Munch’s women, wonderfully haunted and estranged and statuesque, mostly. They always seemed filled with a remote and supernatural power, and remain a huge influence over the look of The Vampire’s Wife. Just so you know. Love, Susie x
