Lee Miller in Hitler’s bathtub in 1945

Lee Miller’s life was as extraordinary as her photos. A Twenties fashion model who became a Surrealist and later the only female combat photographer in Europe during the war, she documented the liberation of Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps. Here she brazenly bathes in Hitler’s bathtub, her dirty boots in full display, still caked with the mud of Dachau. She married the surrealist Roland Penrose and even though she eventually succumbed to alcoholism and died, despairing and embittered, she lived beyond the expectations of everyone around her.
