DEEP NIGHT BY RUAN CHI

Deep Night

Classical Chinese poetry, written over the course of three thousand years has the capacity to speak to our very hearts. Direct, haunted and timeless, it talks of the human experience as if through a veil of dreams—so simple and beautiful. Please, everyone, look after yourselves. Love, Susie x

Deep Night

Deep night. I cannot sleep

I get up. Play some gentle music.

Moonlight glows in the gauze curtains.

I open my nightgown and let

The fresh night air bathes my body

A lonely night bird in a distant meadow

Calls through the trees.

I come and go without rest.

What do I gain by it?

My mind is distracted by worries

That will never cease.

My heart is all bruised

By a troubled ghost who haunts it.
