Warning. Listen at own risk.

“I want to put up a song that is savage and raw and defiant and completely racked.”

That’s me talking to my husband. He is sitting at his desk.

“Why?” he says.

“I don’t know. I just do.”

“You mean you really want to blow everybody’s mind unconditionally and forever?”

“Yes, I want to put up a song that has an impact beyond what we can expect from a song. Have you got any ideas?”

“There is a song I know that will take people to a place from which they may never return. How does that sound?”

“I’m ready!” I say.

“But as I say, this is not to be trifled with. You should warn them before they play it that there are those who have listened to this song and had their lives changed forever. It changed mine.”

“Okay,” I say.

Sweet Surrender by Tim Buckley.”

“Okay,” I say.

“Anything else?”

‘No. That’s it. Thanks.”

I don’t leave. My husband looks up at me.

“I love you, you know,” I say.

He smiles. “Yeah, I know.”

Sweet Surrender

Now you wanna know the reason
Why I cheated on you?
Well I had to be a hunter again.
This little man had to try
To make love feel new again.
'Cause there's just a few things, honey
I'm not old enough to do for you. Ohh.
And they're the things, momma
You just never care to show me. Ohh.
So this flim-flam lover boy
Found him a flamingo.
And his flamingo
Showed him how to tango.
And when they tangoed
It'd send their heart's a 'flutter.
Teased him 'till he'd stutter.
Made him so young and tender.
Sweet to surrender
And so sweet surrender.
In sweet surrender.
Ahh, sweet surrender to love.

But now you're gonna go out
And get yourself
A reputation.
But I'm gonna have to show you
Where to start.
And then you're gonna bring back
Your little reputation
And prove to me
What I could not prove to you.
'Cause I was just too young at heart.
I'm just too cold, honey.
Just too hard to care.
Just too hard, 'right
To surrender.
Surrender to love.
Sweet surrender
Surrender to love
