VIRGINIA WOOLF BY JULIA MARGARET CAMERON

Virginia Woolf

I spent Sunday morning looking at the beautiful photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron, in a wonderful, old book I have of her photography. They are dream photographs, eccentric, fantastical and absolutely unique and some of the earliest art photographs ever taken. Julia Margaret Cameron said,

“I longed to arrest all beauty that came before me, and at length the longing has been satisfied.”

“Beauty, you’re under arrest. I have a camera, and I’m not afraid to use it.”

I became arrested by them, lost to them, swept away, as I often do. She photographed Virginia Woolf, along with other luminaries of the time, and then I started to look at Virginia Woolf, and found these quotes.

“The truth is, I often like women. I like their unconventionality. I like their completeness. I like their anonymity. ”

“No need to hurry. No need to sparkle. No need to be anybody but oneself.”

A lovely morning spent with two wild and deeply unconventional women. Lots of love, Susie x
