The Johnstone Sisters
Janet and Anne Johnstone were twin sisters and British children's book illustrators best known for their delicate, detailed prolific artwork. They sat and passed their drawings back and forth to each other until they felt they were finished. It is their colour combinations and lovely period costumes that we love here at Vampire's Wife.Anne Grahame Johnstone and Janet Johnstone made up the illustrious duo of identical twin children’s book illustrators in 20th century Britain and are known today as simply “the Johnstone Twins.” They are remembered for their prolific and meticulously detailed, whimsical drawings. Together, the twins illustrated over one hundred books! Filled with brilliant colors, expressive eyes, veils of stars and woodland creatures, the Twins’ art lives on on the page but also in the hearts of those who remember the images as children (as well as with those who are newly discovering it today). The sisters had such a close and tender bond that their brother described them as being more like one and a half people rather than two separate women. They are most well-known for their work on Dodie Smith’s The Hundred and One Dalmations, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood as well as many Paul Gallico stories, to name a few.
