In praise of wonderment

As a little girl of seven and eight, I used to watch Wonder Woman on the TV and to say that she was a role model would be an understatement. I simply wanted to become her and much of my inner life, my fantasy life, was spent in the role of Wonder Woman. I remember the feeling of stepping from my sometimes drab world in Bromley into my imagination and becoming this exquisite creature with her magic cuffs and lasso of truth. Such were my childhood fantasies. If I close my eyes, I can remember it now. I read this quote from Maria Popov’s marvellous Brain Pickings website and, well, it somehow reminded me of those young years. Her words are worth considering.

“One of the sad things today is that so many people are frightened by the wonder of their own presence. They are dying to tie themselves into a system, a role, or to an image, or to a predetermined identity that other people have actually settled on for them. This identity may be totally at variance with the wild energies that are rising inside in their souls. Many of us get very afraid and we eventually compromise. We settle for something that is safe, rather than engaging the danger and the wildness that is in our own hearts.”

We are all wounded. This is the way it is. But to see the world perpetually through our wounds and through the pain we imagine is inflicted upon us by the world is to deny ourselves access to our own wonderment, our own sense of awe. This is the unique part of our individual selves, that defines who we are. To me, this is what the Stuff Page actually is – my Wonder Page. Thanks for visiting.
